چکیده

The aim of the present paper is a systematic elaboration of a three dimensional finite element analysis tool for discontinuous fracture in brittle solids. Brittle or quasi-brittle fracture usually occurs when a material reaches the limit of its strength and no plastic deformation has been observed prior to failure. In this novel approach, this kind of failure is characterized by three sets of governing equations: (i) the elastic bulk problem and (ii) the cohesive interface problem regarding the solid deformation field and (iii) the crack tracking problem concerning the crack kinematics. This manuscript describes a unique modular tool for the coupled set of nonlinear equations. We focus in particular on the boundary conditions for the crack tracking problem. Finally, the capability of the method to simulate brittle fracture is demonstrated by qualitative and quantitative comparisons with experiments from the literature as well as by common benchmark problems. keywords: discontinuities failure, brittle fracture, interface, cohesive crack concept, concrete modeling, crack tracking

A new conforming mesh generator for three-dimensional discrete fracture networks

Nowadays, numerical modelings play a key role in analyzing hydraulic problems in fractured rock media. The discrete fracture network model is one of the most used numerical models to simulate the geometrical structure of a rock-mass. In such media, discontinuities are considered as discrete paths for fluid flow through the rock-mass while its matrix is assumed impermeable. There are two main pa...

Cracking Elements Method for Simulating Complex Crack Growth

The cracking elements method (CEM) is a novel numerical approach for simulating fracture of quasi-brittle materials. This method is built in the framework of conventional finite element method (FEM) based on standard Galerkin approximation, which models the cracks with disconnected cracking segments. The orientation of propagating cracks is determined by local criteria and no explicit or implic...

Evaluation of Ultimate Torsional Strength of Reinforcement Concrete Beams Using Finite Element Analysis and Artificial Neural Network

Due to lack of theory of elasticity, estimation of ultimate torsional strength of reinforcement concrete beams is a difficult task. Therefore, the finite element methods could be applied for determination of strength of concrete beams. Furthermore, for complicated, highly nonlinear and ambiguous status, artificial neural networks are appropriate tools for prediction of behavior of such states. ...
